Description

There is a geometry in nature that no machine has ever replicated: the branching architecture of a feather quill — each barb extending from a central rachis, each barbule interlocking with the next. It is called pennaceous structure. This sweater is built from it.

Hand-beaded by Stacy Stewart Smith in New York City, the Pennaceous Beaded Boiled Wool Sweater translates that organic geometry into glass and light. Each seed bead is placed individually by hand onto a ground of dense boiled wool — structured, warm, and substantial — in a pattern derived directly from the microscopic architecture of a feather. The surface catches light differently at every angle. No two sweaters are identical. The process is ongoing; the result is permanent.

Peacock, rooster, and pheasant feathers emerge from the hem — each one placed by hand, each one secured for wear.

Construction

  • Shell: 60% Viscose, 40% Wool — boiled wool, 20% stretch
  • Lining: 100% Silk Habotai, cut on the bias for stretch and drape
  • Embellishment: Hand-applied glass seed beads in pennaceous pattern
  • Hem: Peacock, rooster, and pheasant feathers, hand-placed
  • Construction: Couture hand-beading by the designer
  • Made to order in New York City by Stacy Stewart Smith

Care

  • Spot clean only — do not hand wash or dry clean
  • Store flat or on a padded hanger away from direct light
  • Handle feather hem with care; feathers are permanently secured but delicate

Available upon completion. Each sweater is made to order. Inquire for current delivery timeline.

Care

Stacy Stewart Smith offers made-to-order garments, fine art, and digital publications — each requiring different care. Please refer to the product description for care and handling instructions specific to your purchase. For garments: dry clean or spot clean unless otherwise noted; do not machine wash. For fine art: keep away from direct sunlight and humidity; handle with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. For digital products and publications: no physical care required; download and archive your files upon receipt.

Design

Every Stacy Stewart Smith piece begins as a drawing and ends as a decision — a deliberate choice of textile, construction method, and proportion made by a single designer with five decades of practice. The same eye that composes a painting composes a coat: line, weight, negative space, and the relationship between form and the body that inhabits it. Garments are produced in New York City, one at a time, to the measurements and preferences of the individual client. No two pieces are identical. No production run exists. This is not manufacturing — it is making.

The atelier sources textiles for their hand, weight, and longevity. Sustainability here is not a campaign. It is the natural consequence of making only what is wanted, from materials chosen to last, by a craftsman who will not put his name on anything less.
