Atelier Quarterly — Behind the Couture Door Technical Package Calculators

WELCOME!

Welcome to Behind the Couture Door, a collection of interactive technical-package calculators created by Stacy Stewart Smith for Atelier Quarterly.

The menswear subscription is $74.99 every three months and includes use of all available menswear technical-package calculators. Currently, the regular menswear woven-shirt calculator is available. Additional categories will be added as they are developed; no release dates are promised.

Use measured sample-garment specifications—not body measurements—to prepare graded size-range information for production-contractor communication. This self-serve browser tool creates an interactive technical package; it is not a sewing pattern, individualized fit service, or fit approval.

  • Begin with final measurements from your sample garment, not body measurements.
  • Use the available garment calculator and confirmed sample size to establish starting specifications.
  • Review and revise inputs and results before exporting your PDF.

Before you begin

Click on the subjects below for more details.

Choose the right calculator

Choose menswear for the currently available regular woven-shirt technical-package calculator. The womenswear offer is separate and not yet available; other menswear categories are in development and will be added as developed, with no release dates promised. The tool prepares manufactured size-range specifications from a measured sample garment—not individualized couture sizing, a sewing pattern, or fit approval.

Enter the calculator sample size

Enter the numeric sample size requested by the calculator; do not guess or rely on the size label alone. For the woven-shirt calculator, use the numeric neck sample size basis requested by that calculator. The entered sample size is highlighted in the calculation. See “Choose a suitable grading sample” for sample suitability guidance.

Using the measurement preparation worksheet

The companion worksheet is a preparation guide for the menswear woven-shirt calculator. Record finished sample-garment measurements, construction details and drawing references, then enter them in the corresponding calculator fields. It does not calculate grades, transfer entries automatically or replace the interactive calculator. Keep it as your own measurement record for future sessions; you do not submit it to the atelier for approval. Review the resulting technical package with your professional pattern-maker and production partners before pattern development or manufacture. Editable entries allow revision; they do not establish accuracy or production readiness.

Calculate and save each session

Each working session produces a printable technical package from the entries and calculated results. To save a revised version, recalculate, review the results, then select Print technical package → Print / Save as PDF again. Each saved PDF records that version of your work; it does not save an editable session for reopening.

Payment and access

The recurring subscription is $74.99 every three months for use of all available menswear technical-package calculators. Currently, the regular menswear woven-shirt calculator is available; additional categories will be added as developed, without promised release dates. After successful payment, you receive an email with two included downloads: an access PDF containing your calculator workspace link, and a woven-shirt measurement preparation worksheet. Use the worksheet to record sample measurements, then enter them into the calculator; the worksheet does not calculate grades or transfer entries automatically. Other services are charged separately. Detailed garment-measuring instructions are available within the paid workspace.

Review before calculating

Grading is based on the sample size you enter, which is highlighted in the calculation, and the calculator’s stated default grading increments. Review the results with your production team, revise inputs or specifications as needed, and export an updated PDF.

CONTROL:
Stay in control of your results

Review and revise your inputs and calculated results before exporting the technical package as a PDF using Print technical package, then Print / Save as PDF. Save the PDF before closing: working entries are not stored for later recovery, and exported PDFs cannot be reopened here as editable projects. You can share the PDF with your contractor; the calculator does not send it automatically.

Choose a suitable grading sample

For best results, begin with a sample in the medium range of the intended size range. BIG & TALL samples and custom or altered prototypes are not suitable starting points for the standard grading approach presented here. If the garment has never been manufactured, use a Fit-Model and a professional pattern-maker to assess its fit and determine whether the sample is appropriate for grading into other sizes.
