Description
Grand soir — the French term for the highest order of evening dress. Not black tie. Not formal. Grand soir. The occasion that demands you arrive looking like you designed the room. The Grand Soir Palace Cape is cut for exactly that moment — a structured sweep of flowing black Persian lamb (71% acetate, 21% cotton, 8% nylon), its embossed velvety pile mimicking the texture and depth of genuine Persian lamb with a surface that catches light differently at every angle. Hand-sewn bugle bead accents run the length of the front opening on a simple, slightly padded trapezoidal silhouette. The cape slips easily over formal attire with a collarless neckline that fastens with loops over ornate glass buttons. The sleek covering is warm and features side elbow-level openings for ease of extending hands in front. The cape is fully lined in sumptuous duchess satin and is constructed with inner straps that allow the wearer to keep the garment on their person. Hang straps allow the cape to be carried gracefully when ascending stairs.
The silhouette is La Belle Époque with a touch of theater — the kind of cape worn by the man who enters the room and upon whom everyone else is watching. The tailored satin lining carries two internal vertical breast pockets large enough for a small theatre program.

Wear it with a white wing-tip collar shirt and black tie for a classically correct grand soir look — or pair it with the Poet Laureate Silk Dress Shirt with Detachable Jabot for an entrance that belongs to no era but your own. Designed to be worn with the Grand Soir Faux Persian Lamb Pleated Windsor Tuxedo Pants as a complete grand soir ensemble.

Care

Spot clean with a damp cloth or consult a dry cleaner who specializes in pile fabrications. Do not press with steam on the face of the fabric. Use a garment steamer to remove slight wrinkles and a soft garment brush to lift lint and residue.

Care

Stacy Stewart Smith offers made-to-order garments, fine art, and digital publications — each requiring different care. Please refer to the product description for care and handling instructions specific to your purchase. For garments: dry clean or spot clean unless otherwise noted; do not machine wash. For fine art: keep away from direct sunlight and humidity; handle with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. For digital products and publications: no physical care required; download and archive your files upon receipt.

Design

Every Stacy Stewart Smith piece begins as a drawing and ends as a decision — a deliberate choice of textile, construction method, and proportion made by a single designer with five decades of practice. The same eye that composes a painting composes a coat: line, weight, negative space, and the relationship between form and the body that inhabits it. Garments are produced in New York City, one at a time, to the measurements and preferences of the individual client. No two pieces are identical. No production run exists. This is not manufacturing — it is making.

The atelier sources textiles for their hand, weight, and longevity. Sustainability here is not a campaign. It is the natural consequence of making only what is wanted, from materials chosen to last, by a craftsman who will not put his name on anything less.
