Description
Noble Kente — a bias-cut long-sleeved dress shirt in hand-printed premium cotton Kente cloth, with gold metallic pixel squares hand-printed throughout. Stacy Stewart Smith uses the pixels to represent the African Diaspora. Each shirt is unique, artist-signed, and made to order in New York City. The bias cut and two back darts create a custom-fitted silhouette without compromising construction. Single-needle tailoring throughout, with French seams, grosgrain and bias tape finishes, and underarm shields. A mandarin collar and triple-breasted natural Akoya shell buttons command the front. Gentle tucks flank the sleeve cuffs and placket, each finished with shell buttons. Medium weight with a soft, prewashed sueded hand. Fit for a king.
The Noble Kente Hand-Printed Premium Cotton Shirt is part of the African Diaspora Collective. It pairs perfectly with the Harris Tweed Blackwatch & Kente Reality Kilt and the Blackwatch Harris Tweed Pleated Reality Pants — the last unconquered frontier in formal menswear.

Fabrication

Each shirt is cut from premium medium-weight, prewashed cotton with a sueded finish. The Cotton cloth features a high-quality, colorful African Kente pattern block print. The shirt parts are cut and then hand-overprinted with acrylic gold metallic pixel squares. This process is kindred to the Abstractrealist art form used in fine art paintings by Stacy Stewart Smith. Each shirt is one of a kind — no two are identical. Each shirt has approximately 26 natural Akoya shell buttons. The Akoya shell comes from the Akoya oyster, scientifically known as Pinctada fucata, which thrives in Japan's coastal waters, particularly in Mie and Kumamoto prefectures. Akoya shells are often harvested sustainably, supporting oyster populations and marine ecosystems.

Sizing

The Noble Kente Shirt is cut on the bias for a tailored fit with natural ease. The sample is posed on a mannequin and a model standing approximately 66'1"66'3"

Select Preorder from the size menu (the option without a listed size). Production takes 15 to 30 days after we receive your order and payment clears. All preorders are subject to designer review. Stacy Stewart Smith reserves the right to decline a commission at discretion. Contact couture@stacystewartsmith.com with any questions before ordering.

Care

Hand wash separately in cool water. Use a gentle cleanser and as little water as possible. Do not soak for more than fifteen minutes. Hang to dry indoors. Do not machine wash, machine dry, or dry clean. Press from the reverse side on a low setting with spray sizing. Always wear with a short-sleeved cotton undergarment because of the garment's delicate construction and fabrication. Replace the underarm shields periodically as needed.

Care

Stacy Stewart Smith offers made-to-order garments, fine art, and digital publications — each requiring different care. Please refer to the product description for care and handling instructions specific to your purchase. For garments: dry clean or spot clean unless otherwise noted; do not machine wash. For fine art: keep away from direct sunlight and humidity; handle with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. For digital products and publications: no physical care required; download and archive your files upon receipt.

Design

Every Stacy Stewart Smith piece begins as a drawing and ends as a decision — a deliberate choice of textile, construction method, and proportion made by a single designer with five decades of practice. The same eye that composes a painting composes a coat: line, weight, negative space, and the relationship between form and the body that inhabits it. Garments are produced in New York City, one at a time, to the measurements and preferences of the individual client. No two pieces are identical. No production run exists. This is not manufacturing — it is making.

The atelier sources textiles for their hand, weight, and longevity. Sustainability here is not a campaign. It is the natural consequence of making only what is wanted, from materials chosen to last, by a craftsman who will not put his name on anything less.
