Couture CAD, Session VI: Digital Fur Using Illustrator and Photoshop

In this session, Stacy Stewart Smith demonstrates how to create realistic digital fur illustrations using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Working from biomorphic garment shapes built in Illustrator, you will learn to simulate fur texture, grain, and coloration using the Crystallize tool, gradient fills, and the Effects Gallery — then transition to Photoshop for detailed refinement using filter combinations, manual brushwork, and layer techniques that elevate the realism of your digital fashion presentations.

This session covers a range of fur types and animal prints, with attention to garment structure, pattern alignment, and the balance between automated effects and artistic judgment. The finishing techniques demonstrated here are the same used in professional couture fashion illustration.

Prerequisites: Working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Basic flats are not covered.
