The Blackwatch and Kente Reality Kilt pays homage to the African Diaspora at the hands of the Scottish. The knife-pleated kilt is luxuriously constructed of 100% wool Blackwatch plaid Harris Tweed® with 100% cotton Kente cloth inlays revealed with movement, sitting, or at an angle. The Reality Kilt is also available in solid onyx Harris Tweed® in place of the plaid. The kilt is 27" long with a 5-yard sweep and features adjustable sliding lock buckles at each side that allow up to 4" of waist ease. The twenty-one 2.5" deep knife pleats are reinforced inside at each seam and stabilized with cotton twill tape to maintain a clean shape from the waist to hip. The garment comes with chrome-tone kilt pins and is lined in black 100% silk duchess satin with a black silk ribbon hem finish.
The Reality Kilt is part of the African Diaspora Collective and is made to order in New York City. Can be worn with the Harris Tweed® Blackwatch Windsor Pants and the Noble Kente Hand-Printed Premium Cotton Shirt.
Construction & Materials
100% wool Blackwatch plaid Harris Tweed® shell. 100% cotton Kente cloth inlay panels. Black 100% silk duchess satin lining. Black silk ribbon hem finish. Inner-waist curtain stabilizer to prevent rolling. Adjustable sliding lock buckles at each side with up to 4" of waist ease. Twenty-one 2.5" deep knife pleats, stitched and bound at waist. No outer waistband. Chrome tone kilt pin included. Length: 27". Sweep: 5 yards.
How to Wear
The Reality Kilt was not born of tradition. It was not issued by a clan. No one assigned it a tartan, a territory, or a set of instructions. And yet, the kilt will tell you where it wants to land.
Wear it at the waist or below. Length is a fashion choice, not a rule. The kilt is designed to be worn at the natural waist or dropped below it. The length changes with the placement. Both are correct.
The lining is part of the design. A 21" silk duchess satin lining hangs straight from the waistband — smooth against the skin, warm in cold air, cool against the body in motion. It shields the pleats from wind and keeps the kilt in position whether you are seated or standing.
Three things that are not negotiable:
- The pleats face back.
- The apron and pin face left.
- The buckles sit at the sides.
These are not rules — they are the grammar of the garment.
On sitting: Smooth the apron forward before you sit. Rise with the same intention. This is the one courtesy the kilt asks of you, and it asks it quietly. The silk lining beneath will not shift, will not bunch, and will not betray you.
Everything else is yours.
Sizing
The kilt is offered in two adjustable sizes. The sliding lock buckles at each side allow up to 4" of waist ease within each size. The 27" length and 5-yard sweep are fixed. Waist size 34 falls within both size ranges to accommodate a larger hip circumference — choose the size with the hip allowance that best fits your body. If you are on the smaller or larger end of the spectrum, select the Custom Preorder option.

Custom Size Preorder
Select Preorder from the size menu (the option without a listed size). Production is 15 to 30 days from receipt and payment clearance. A couture toile is draped from your measurements while materials are prepared. To begin your custom preorder, complete the Couture Client Measurement Form. The form requires registration, payment, and download, and serves as your client intake agreement. The $5.00 fee is non-refundable. Complete every field and return the completed form to couture@stacystewartsmith.com with your order number before production begins.
First time clients must add the measurement form to the cart. Only one is needed for all items purchased.
All preorders are subject to designer review. Stacy Stewart Smith reserves the right to decline a commission at discretion.
Provenance & Delivery
Made to order in New York City. Shipped in a gift box with garment bag and a wooden hanger. Due to the bespoke nature of this garment, returns and exchanges are not accepted. Preorders are not refundable. Shipping insurance is strongly recommended.

Care
Spot clean with a damp cloth (preferred) or professional dry clean with a specialist in luxury garments. Do not apply steam heat directly to the kilt — it will damage the Harris Tweed® and silk lining. Use a pressing cloth when restoring pleats. Hang vertically using the hang straps — do not fold. Arrives beautifully boxed with extra buttons and two kilt pins.

El mismo ojo que compone una pintura compone un abrigo: línea, peso, espacio negativo y la relación entre la forma y el cuerpo que la habita. Las prendas se producen en la ciudad de Nueva York, una a una, a medida y según las preferencias de cada cliente. No hay dos piezas idénticas. No existe una producción en serie. Esto no es fabricación —es creación.
El taller busca textiles por su tacto, peso y durabilidad. La sostenibilidad aquí no es una campaña. Es la consecuencia natural de hacer solo lo que se desea, con materiales elegidos para durar, por un artesano que no pondrá su nombre en nada menos.
