Stacy Stewart Smith Men's Bishop Tigrado Shearling Fur Coat
Description
The Bishop: a private couture commission
The Bishop is a fully custom garment made in New York under the personal direction of Stacy Stewart Smith. The atelier’s parallel 38–44 body-size scale provides a familiar starting point, while every commissioned coat is cut and refined for its individual client.
Clients may order directly below. If you would like to discuss suitability, lining, or the commission process first, request a private consultation with the atelier.
Material and silhouette
The Bishop is cut in Spanish Tigrado shearling, prized for its naturally wavy texture, marbled appearance, warmth, and soft hand. This season’s commission is offered exclusively in Onyx, black with silver highlights and curly to semi-curly hair, and is fully lined in customizable duchess satin.
Its long, authoritative silhouette takes its name from the bishop’s frock. A standing robe collar frames the face, a leather-button front closes with quiet authority, and exaggerated shoulders create a simple but unmistakably masculine presence. A structured curtain within the hem maintains the abbreviated frock shape and helps the coat move with the wearer.
Construction
- Spanish Tigrado sheepskin shearling in Onyx
- Hand-stitched stabilization panels and exaggerated shoulder padding
- Cotton twill tape stabilizing every seam
- Movable poly-cotton pelt backing
- Leather-button front and standing robe collar
- Structured curtain hem
- Full customizable duchess satin lining
Two front pockets with self-flaps provide storage and hand warming, with a concealed pocket inside one flap. The lining includes zip-secured vertical breast pockets with metal chain pulls, a large patch pocket for a small tablet or documents, and a hanging key ring on a chain.

Body size reference
Use this parallel couture scale as the starting point for your commission. The selected reference size will be recorded for the atelier; Bishop remains custom made.
| Couture size | EU | Body chest | Maximum body waist | Shoulder | Sleeve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 38 | 48 | 37–38" | 30" | 18.5" | 25.5" |
| 40 | 50 | 39–40" | 32" | 19" | 25.75" |
| 42 | 52 | 41–42" | 34" | 19.5" | 26" |
| 44 | 54 | 43–44" | 36" | 19.5" | 26" |
Measurements outside the reference scale do not automatically exclude a commission. The atelier may recommend special alterations or an exclusive variation after review.
How to order
Select Preorder 30–60 days and Onyx to reserve the commission. Production begins after payment clears and the completed client measurement form is received and reviewed. A couture toile is prepared from the submitted measurements while materials are readied.
First-time preorder and custom clients must purchase the couture measurement form.
Measurements $5
Only one form is required for all items in an order. Complete it and return it with the order number before production begins.

Provenance and delivery
Made to order in New York City. The coat is delivered in a gift box with a garment bag, extra buttons, and a wooden hanger. Because it is bespoke, the commission is nonreturnable and nonrefundable. Shipping insurance is strongly recommended.
Care
Spot clean with a damp cloth and remove lint with a soft garment brush. Store with space around the coat in a cool, dry place during warmer seasons. Use a professional fur cleaning, glazing, and cold-storage service every two years to preserve the shearling.
Leather and shearling are natural materials. Slight variations in color and texture are part of each hide and meet the atelier’s quality standard.
Care
Stacy Stewart Smith offers made-to-order garments, fine art, and digital publications — each requiring different care. Please refer to the product description for care and handling instructions specific to your purchase. For garments: dry clean or spot clean unless otherwise noted; do not machine wash. For fine art: keep away from direct sunlight and humidity; handle with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. For digital products and publications: no physical care required; download and archive your files upon receipt.
Design
Every Stacy Stewart Smith piece begins as a drawing and ends as a decision — a deliberate choice of textile, construction method, and proportion made by a single designer with five decades of practice. The same eye that composes a painting composes a coat: line, weight, negative space, and the relationship between form and the body that inhabits it. Garments are produced in New York City, one at a time, to the measurements and preferences of the individual client. No two pieces are identical. No production run exists. This is not manufacturing — it is making.
The atelier sources textiles for their hand, weight, and longevity. Sustainability here is not a campaign. It is the natural consequence of making only what is wanted, from materials chosen to last, by a craftsman who will not put his name on anything less.
