Description

Pawns in Gold © 2003 & 2025 — a limited edition hand-painted and hand-printed dress shirt in metallic yellow-gold acrylic on premium Onyx (black) cotton percale. The subject matter is a meditation on the chess pawn — the least powerful piece on the board, yet the one capable of ascending to royalty. Each garment is an original work of art, painted and printed by Stacy Stewart Smith and signed by the designer. No two are identical.

The shirt bears a full metallic gold-painted collar and cuffs and is hand-painted throughout, each dot a single brushstroke of the artist’s hand. Abstracted self-portraits — a limited-edition study circa 2003 — are printed across the ground. Signs of the artist’s hand — residue beneath the cuffs, around buttons, on the reverse — are inherent to the work and part of its beauty. Available in Onyx (black ground) only. The shirt arrives beautifully boxed with a certificate of authenticity.

Provenance & Delivery

Made to order in the USA. Shipped in a presentation box with a signed certificate of authenticity. Due to the bespoke nature of this garment, returns and exchanges are not accepted.

Care

Remove metal collar stays before laundering. Hand wash in cold water with a delicate detergent — do not soak longer than 15 minutes, do not wring. Hang dry away from direct sunlight. Do not machine wash, machine dry, dry clean, or press the painted surface. If pressing is needed, work from the reverse side only. To preserve the artwork, spot-clean only where possible: apply a solution of distilled water and gentle cleanser to the reverse side with a clean, colorless sponge. To eliminate odors, lightly mist the reverse with a 90/10 solution of distilled water and vodka; hang to dry.

The shirt will have a crisp hand before laundering. Both image and color will soften with time and cleaning — as with all wearable art. The garment may be worn, displayed, or framed.

Care

Stacy Stewart Smith offers made-to-order garments, fine art, and digital publications — each requiring different care. Please refer to the product description for care and handling instructions specific to your purchase. For garments: dry clean or spot clean unless otherwise noted; do not machine wash. For fine art: keep away from direct sunlight and humidity; handle with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves. For digital products and publications: no physical care required; download and archive your files upon receipt.

Design

Every Stacy Stewart Smith piece begins as a drawing and ends as a decision — a deliberate choice of textile, construction method, and proportion made by a single designer with five decades of practice. The same eye that composes a painting composes a coat: line, weight, negative space, and the relationship between form and the body that inhabits it. Garments are produced in New York City, one at a time, to the measurements and preferences of the individual client. No two pieces are identical. No production run exists. This is not manufacturing — it is making.

The atelier sources textiles for their hand, weight, and longevity. Sustainability here is not a campaign. It is the natural consequence of making only what is wanted, from materials chosen to last, by a craftsman who will not put his name on anything less.
